Australia’s cheapest electric car, the MG ZS EV, sold out until next year

The first shipment of Australia’s cheapest electric car, the MG ZS EV, has sold out within days of the vehicle arriving in local showrooms.

MG dealers contacted by Drive have confirmed the first 100 examples of the $43,990 drive-away MG ZS EV are spoken for, with the next deliveries due in late January, early February.

The MG ZS EV has a claimed driving range of 263km in ideal conditions – from a single charge – and undercuts its nearest rivals, the Nissan Leaf ($53,000 drive-away) and Hyundai Ioniq electric ($55,000 drive-away), by at least $9000.

Unlike other MG models sold in Australia which come with a seven-year warranty, the MG ZS EV has five-year coverage on the vehicle, and eight-year/160,000km coverage on the battery pack.

While the first 100 examples of the MG ZS EV have been reported as sold, dealers contacted by Drive claim there is a handful remaining in dealer stock as “demonstrator” models.

“If you really want one before Christmas and you search pretty hard you might find one,” said a long-standing MG dealer. “But the first 100 have been declared as sold to MG, and they’re now trying to get more stock.”

The MG ZS EV was originally priced from $46,990 drive-away but subsequent negotiations before launch slashed the price to $43,990 drive-away.

The MG ZS EV is based on the petrol variant of the same model, which was introduced locally by the Chinese manufacturer in 2017, and has a four-star safety rating from the same year.
