BMW Concept Definition CE 04 – UPDATE: Electric scooter confirmed for Australia

The futuristic zero-emission scooter will arrive in local showrooms next year, priced from $20,350 before on-road costs.

UPDATE, 9 July 2021: A production version of the BMW Motorrad CE 04 electric scooter has been confirmed for the Australian market, with initial deliveries slated for the first quarter of 2022 (January to March inclusive). Pricing will start from $20,350 before on-road costs.

Power comes from a single 31kW/62Nm liquid-cooled electric motor, which draws energy from a 8.9kWh lithium-ion battery permitting a range of 130km on Europe's WLTP test cycle.

BMW claims a 0-50km/h time of 2.7 seconds, and an electronically-limited top speed of 120km/h.

When charging with a 2.3kW, 10-amp wall box, the battery pack can be topped up from empty in four hours and 20 minutes. With a 30-amp fast charger – which BMW will install for $1330 – this time drops to one hour and 40 minutes.

A 10.25-inch instrument cluster is mounted between the handlebars, providing access to a satellite navigation system and performance settings. A USB-C charging port is also integrated into this unit.

Automatic stability control and anti-lock braking systems come standard, as does an LED headlight and heated seat.

16 November 2020: BMW Motorrad has launched its Concept Definition CE 04 all-electric scooter at the #NEXTGen 2020 conference.

The two-wheeler is based on BMW’s 2017 Concept Link design, and features an integrated 10.25-inch smartphone connective display system.

The flat battery – packaged in the base of the frame – allows for a low centre of gravity and “playful handling."

The design also incorporates extensive storage space, with a focus placed on ergonomics over comfort.

No powertrain or battery details have yet been announced, however range in unlikely to be particularly impressive.

A press release from BMW Motorrad says “the target group mainly rides short distances of approximately 12 km per day.”

The final production product is expected to look very similar to the concept, and a series variant will likely come onto the market in the next few years.

Pricing will be released closer to launch.

Anime fans will also note, the low-slung seating position, rear axle design, and extended foot sills, are reminiscent of the iconic motorcycle featured in 1980s' Japanese post-apocalyptic cyberpunk film Akira. (I haven't seen it, but Stevo made me mention it...) (Damn right I did! – Stevo)
