Frontier, is that you?

Nissan managed to sneak in a cheeky look at the updated North American market Frontier and Titan pickup trucks in the new Navara’s recent global presentation.

What better way to tease an impending product update than to subtly slide it into the reveal of another product. Well played Nissan!

The image in the presentation, which shows some Nissan designers staring 'Ferris Bueller style' at some conceptual drawings on the wall (totally natural and candid), features a row of three utes that represent Nissan’s global pickup range.

On the far left, the full-size Nissan Titan with a new C-shape LED signature, and on the far right, the new MY21 D23 Nissan Navara.

In the middle though, is the updated Nissan Frontier.

Squared-off LED lights and a more rectangular grille separate it from the Navara, and given the demands of the US-market, it would not be unreasonable to assume the Frontier will be slightly bigger, as the bonnet lines in the image look to represent a wider body.

The current Nissan Frontier is essentially the previous-generation D40 Navara sold in Canada and the USA, and is powered by a 3.8-litre direct-injection petrol V6 with 231kW and 381Nm, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Not bad for a platform that launched in 2004.

Nissan currently offers the Frontier as a King-Cab or double-cab, with either two- or four-wheel drive, a couple of tub-length options, and even a Pro-4X off-road lifestyle package, which we will now see as the range-topping Navara variant.

Up until now, North America has not sold the D23 Navara, but the 2021 Frontier will be similar to the facelifted Navara we will see on local soil in the new year, but with the V6 and nine-speed running gear from the outgoing D40 model.

Keep in mind, the Frontier is built in Mississippi and doesn’t have to fulfil an export requirement, so can be built specifically for North American buyers.

What is more interesting to Australian buyers though, is the larger Titan, which competes with the likes of the Chevrolet Silverado and RAM 2500, and has enjoyed an on-again / off-again discussion of receiving a factory RHD production program.

The current model exclusively runs the 5.6-litre 298kW petrol V8 from the Patrol.
