Lego Creator’s Ghostbusters ECTO-1 kit: $300 supersized kit

Ghostbusters fans, before you make a definitive decision as to the merits of Ghostbusters: Afterlife – set for release in 2021 – stop and consider this:

without the new movie, there would probably be no new ECTO-1 kit from Lego.

While it isn’t the first Lego kit honouring the 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance that took a starring role in the original 1984 Ghostbusters film, this new version is by far the most detailed.

As part of Lego’s Creator range, the new ECTO-1 kit hones in on the fine details rather than the mechanical or technical merits in the same way a Technic kit might.

To that end, you get about as faithful a reproduction of the Ectomobile as Lego will allow. And this one doesn’t need suspension work and shocks. Brakes, brake pads, lining, steering box, transmission… I’m sure you get the gist.

Unlike the earlier kits (no. 21108 and 75828 if you want to look them up), and their eight-stud wide minifig-scale proportions, the new kit goes large.

Measuring 22.5cm high, 47cm long and 16.5cm wide, and made up of 2352 pieces, assembly is sure to keep even the most ardent Lego fans busy for a while.

More than just a stationary model though, the kit packs in some authentic working details (spoiler alert, some of these features are from the new film, not the old, so look away now if you don’t want the surprise ruined).

There’s a detailed engine bay under the bonnet, working steering, a roof mounted ghost-sniffer for detecting psychokinetic energy, a deployable mobile ghost trap, and a gunner seat in the rear that rotates out of the car.

While Lego may have mastered the art of repurposing its existing modular components for different kits, two new LEGO brick elements enter the catalogue with this set; a 6×14 curved windscreen and a five-module steering wheel. Don't be surprised to see both appear on future Creator models.

As the largest ECTO-1 one kit from Lego to date, this new model packs in plenty of silver-screen elements and looks set to appeal to Lego collectors and film buffs alike. Past movie cars include Dom's Dodge Charger from Fast & Furious and the James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger.

Priced at AU$299.99 and set for a November 15, 2020 release on Lego’s Australian website, we get the feeling this kit might soon be showing ‘sold out’ given the enduring popularity of the Ghostbusters movies.

You can find the product listing on Lego’s website, here, along with some additional details about the new set.
