NRMA reversing visibility test results

The NRMA has released results for the latest reversing visibility test. Cars are judged using a simple star rating system; more stars equal a high rear visibility.

Using a laser setup and a cylinder to represent the height and width of a two-year old toddler, the NRMA conducts various procedures inside a grid measuring 1.8 metres by 15 metres. The laser is then directed through the rear window of the vehicle from a number of positions on the grid.

The list-topping cars for each category include;

  • Small - Proton savvy with parking sensor (4 stars)
  • Small to Medium - Kia Soul with parking camera (5 stars)
  • Medium - Toyota Camry with parking camera (4.5 stars)
  • Large - Holden Commodore with parking camera (5 stars)
  • People movers - Subaru Exiga with parking camera (5 stars)
  • Sports - Lexus IS F with sensors and parking camera (5 stars)
  • Luxury - Honda Legend with parking camera (5 stars)
  • SUV - BMW X5, Ford Territory, Kia Sorento, Mitsubishi ASX, Toyota Prado, all with parking cameras (5 stars)
  • Utilities - Great Wall Motors SA220 (3 stars)

Some popular cars that received zero stars included - although we're not sure how this is possible, the laser must not have been able to pin point the cylinder representation at all:

  • Mazda2
  • Hyundai i30
  • Mazda6
  • Holden Epic
  • Honda Accord Euro
  • Toyota Corolla
  • Holden Commodore (sedan)
  • Ford Falcon (sedan)
  • Subaru Liberty Exiga
  • Audi S4
  • Audi A5
  • Toyota Rav4
  • Toyota Prado

Most of these cars do come with an optional parking sensor or parking camera feature, these were without such options.
