2021 BMW iX3 due in Australian showrooms next year

The 2021 BMW iX3 all-electric SUV will come onto the Australian market mid-next year, the company has confirmed.

Underpinned by the same architecture as the conventional petrol- and diesel-powered X3, the new SUV will debut BMW’s fifth-generation electrified eDrive system.

This drivetrain – which is also slated to underpin the upcoming iNext SUV and i4 liftback models – will likely only be offered in one configuration when it initially comes onto the market, however a spokesperson for BMW did not rule out the possibility of a high-performance M edition in the future.

A single electric motor draws voltage from a 74kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and 210kW/400Nm is sent to the rear wheels.

According to BMW, this is enough to launch the car from 0-100km/h in 6.8 seconds.

Drive

New flat-faced aerodynamic wheels represent the most significant external aesthetic deviation from the standard X3 model.

A range of 460 kilometres is claimed, and, when you do run out of power, you’ll be able to recharge the battery up to 80 per cent in just 34 minutes on a 150kW DC unit.

Inside, the cabin is understood to be effectively indistinguishable to that of a conventional X3, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central display running BMW’s iDrive 7 infotainment system.

The model will be BMW's first to be produced in China for major export markets.

Local pricing is expected to be announced closer to launch.
