GWM Ute dual-cab 4×4 launches with $33,990 drive-away deal

Not the cheapest anymore, but a reborn GWM retains its value-focussed positioning.

GWM Australia, previously known as Great Wall Motors, has dropped the first pricing detail for its new 4x4 dual-cab ute, known simply as the GWM Ute.

While it doesn’t claim the title of Australia’s cheapest dual-cab any more, a title held by the previous Great Wall Steed, the GWM Ute still has value on its side with a $33,990 drive-away offer for the entry-level Cannon specification.

GWM has confirmed that the base price includes four-wheel drive, an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, and a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine. Outputs are now also confirmed at 120kW and 400Nm from the GWM-developed engine.

Also confirmed with the pricing announcement are standard safety inclusions across the range, including seven airbags, lane keep assist, and autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection.

Although not included as a part of today's pricing reveal, GWM’s own teaser website for the Ute mentions some of the other available features that buyers can expect, though doesn't yet clarify if they’re specific to the base model Cannon, mid-spec Cannon-L or high-grade Cannon-X.

The list so far includes a 9.0-inch Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible infotainment system, an extendable ladder to access the tray, and front and rear parking sensors

GWM also mentions best-in-class leg room (though doesn't specify front or rear) and a 4x4 system built with Bosch all-terrain technology.

In the budget ute sector the GWM Ute Cannon faces off against the manual-only Mahindra Pik-Up S10+ dual-cab, with a 103kW/320Nm 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine, and the LDV T60 Pro, which starts from $28,990 drive away for ABN holders with a six-speed manual or $2000 more for a six-speed automatic, both powered by a 2.8-litre turbo diesel producing 110kW/360Nm.

To match the dual-cab automatic spec of the GWM ute a Mitsubishi Triton GLX 4x4 pick-up starts from $39,240 under current drive-away deals, with a 133kW/430Nm 2.4-litre turbo diesel engine. The newly updated Toyota HiLux Workmate 4x4 (its cheapest matching spec) starts from $48,790 plus on-road costs, or around $53,000 on the road (depending on state of purchase).

The outgoing Great Wall Steed carries a $25,900 drive-away price for a 4x4 manual with a 110kW/310Nm 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine.

In a statement accompanying the pricing details GWM Australia head of marketing, Steve Maciver, said, "We firmly believe that the new GWM Ute offers a compelling all round package that will make Australian buyers think differently about their next ute”.

“The $33,990 entry price point for the 4x4 Dual Cab Cannon AT is quite exceptional given the high level of features buyers can expect.”

“We understand both the competitiveness and the opportunity in the ute segment and as such, it was important that we come in with a strong product offering and unbeatable value. The new GWM Ute firmly ticks those boxes and we expect to see increased customer interest in showrooms over the coming weeks,” Mr Maciver said.

Initial stock of the GWM Ute has started arriving into Australia and will filter into dealerships soon. GWM has yet to reveal full-range pricing and specification info the new Ute range, with full details to follow in mid November.
