Aussie young gun tests Renault F1 car
The 19-year-old completed around 500km in Bahrain.
Australian Formula One hopeful, Oscar Piastri, has had his first taste of an F1 car, clocking up just under 500km behind the wheel of a Renault R.S. 18 at the Sakhir International Circuit in Bahrain.
The 19-year-old was given the opportunity to test the Renault F1 car following his stunning victory in the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
Piastri admitted to being nervous before getting behind the wheel of the 2018-spec F1 car.
“That was pretty crazy. The Renault F1 car certainly lived up to the excitement,” said Piastri.
“I was a little bit nervous beforehand, which is pretty normal, but after the first lap I got over that and focussed on driving fast and having fun. I think I adapted quite well and got up to speed reasonably quickly.
“I really enjoyed the day, so a massive thank you to Renault for this opportunity. I’m feeling very lucky to drive an F1 car. Not everyone gets to do it, so a massive thanks to them.”
Piastri, who is managed by Aussie F1 great Mark Webber, is regarded as Australia’s next Formula One prospect and following his F3 title win, is likely to graduate to the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2021.
