2021 Porsche 911 Carrera Cross: High-riding ‘Safari’ imagined

Following a prototype Porsche spied with raised suspension, we explore what a factory Safari could look like.

A prototype Porsche 911 has been spied testing in Germany, but with one curious detail: raised suspension.

Why a brand-new 911 sports car would even be fitted with high-riding suspension remains a mystery. At this stage there have been no industry whispers about such a variant.

However, in the past few months we know Porsche has been testing a Taycan Cross Turismo, using a lifted body to combine the best aspects of a large luxury wagon with the clearance of an SUV.

Perhaps a Porsche 911 Carrera Cross is under consideration – offering a more forgiving ride and handling package for areas of the world where roads are not as well-maintained as race tracks.

CarAdvice contributor Alex Misoyannis has created a render of what a 2021 Porsche 911 Cross could look like (above), featuring raised suspension, black plastic wheel arches, under-body armour, and large fog lights.

An aftermarket flat roof-rack system with a spare wheel and all-terrain tyres, a high-lift jack and a shovel complete the look.

The real-life prototype was spotted by YouTube channel Stateside Super Cars driving at Germany's legendary Nurburgring during a manufacturers' test day, suggesting the idea of a lifted 911 may be closer to production than we know.

Interest in off-road 911s has increased dramatically in recent years, as builders turned older Porsches into what's known as 'Safari' cars – with long waiting lists and big price tags.

Earlier this month, patents emerged of a high-riding Alpine A110, solidifying the possibility of a 'Safari' version of the French sports car. It's possible Porsche is responding to Alpine's plans, ensuring its competitor does not have a niche segment all to itself.

While it remains to be seen whether these brand-new off-road coupes will make it to production, there may well be enough buyers wanting a few more modern creature comforts to justify such vehicles.
