The week that was: Electric Hummer revealed, Hyundai’s i20 N hot hatch, and more

Become an armchair expert with this list of last week’s 10 most popular – or most interesting – news stories.

An electric Hummer, the world’s fastest road car (unofficially), a new pint-size hot hatch from Hyundai, and Tesla price rises for its Supercharger power in Australia. These are just some of the top news stories from last week.

Here's a quick recap, with links to the original stories so you can catch up in no time.

General Motors is about to resurrect the Hummer brand name but not as a gas-guzzling V8 but a hulking heavy-duty four-wheel-drive with epic electric power.

US hypercar manufacturer SSC North America unofficially smashed the record for the world’s fastest road car, its SSC Tuatara (pictured below), recording an average speed of 508.73km/h over two runs on State Route 160 in Nevada on 10 October, 2020.

However, Guiness World Records the vehicle to be in scale or mass production (as per the Bugatti Chiron). Still it was an amazing feat: read the technicalities here.

On a sad note, Honda confirmed its NSX supercar has been dropped from the Australian line-up, after just nine sales locally in four years.

Hyundai unveiled its first pint size hot hatch, the i20N. We drove a camouflaged version of it last month but now we know what it looks like under the covers. Still no word on price.

Holden dealers have told us they believe the network is down to its last 500 or so cars. The car company was hoping to have all reported as sold by the end of last month. Here are the discounts, line by line and model by model.

A week after Tesla reduced the price some models the electric car specialist has increased prices of its supercharger network by almost 25 per cent. Imagine if petrol prices shifted by 25 per cent. Oh wait…

The Mazda BT50 ute was awarded a five-star safety score this week (the same as its twin under the skin, the Isuzu D-Max) however it lost points for pedestrian protection. Find out why here.

A leaked dealer bulletin gave us the first look at the Nissan Patrol Warrior. Although it was a blurry image – and Nissan is yet to confirm production – this is the clearest sign yet that it is on its way.

The same dealer bulletin outlined 12 new or revised Nissan models coming in the next three years. The company will certainly be on a roll once the fresh metal turns up.

While the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger remain our top two selling vehicles outright – and are currently not at risk of losing their sales positions – the Hyundai i30 could become the nation’s top-selling passenger car next year thanks to a name change on the Elantra sedan. The new Elantra has been renamed i30 sedan. It means Hyundai’s small sedan and hatch will be counted together rather than separately.

Given that the Hyundai i30 and Hyundai Elantra outsold the Toyota Corolla twice in the past four years, there is every chance the Corolla could be overtaken in 2021. Watch this space.
