2021 SsangYong Rexton facelift leaked, Australian launch confirmed

Well, here it is! New promotional images posted to Russian website Kolesa.ru reveal the extent of the changes we'll see on the 2021 SsangYong Rexton.

As the earlier teaser images revealed, we can expect a bold new grille design – shown here in a dark shadow chrome finish – along with subtly tweaked lighting internals and bumpers at both ends.

The local arm of SsangYong has today confirmed the 2021 SsangYong Rexton facelift will make its Australian debut in the second quarter of 2021. Further details will be revealed in the lead-up to its launch.

The new-look Rexton will make its global debut in November.

October 20, 10:50am: A new look for the 2021 SsangYong Rexton is on the way, with a crucial facelift not only teased this week – but also revealed through a leak on Instagram.

The teaser images show a broad new chrome-heavy grille design for the Rexton, which – while not a particularly unique look – represents some of the most modern, Western styling the brand has attempted.

Subtly reshaped headlights host a new hooked LED signature, while the rear gets new tail lamps with a more streamlined shape and a lighting signature borrowed from the previous-generation Mercedes A-Class.

These aspects of the design are more obvious in the leaked promotional images posted to the story page of Instagram account @carsrob.

Rear-end tweaks are rounded out by a lightly revised bumper design, adding re-styled reflectors and new chrome trim inserts along the lower edge – in roughly the shape of exhaust outlets, albeit blanked off.

Changes in the cabin include a new steering wheel with a four-spoke design, and a digital driver's display in place of the current model's combination analogue meters and central display.

Little else is known about the updated model at this time, although an official unveiling is expected to occur in South Korea on November 4.

The Rexton has not had a strong run in Australia since its new-generation return in 2018. Just 135 examples were registered in 2019, but there is a bright side for the brand, achieving 196 year-to-date Rexton sales in 2020 – despite the impact of COVID-19.
