Holden down to last 500 cars: discounts listed model by model

Holden has asked dealers to report all remaining new cars as sold by the end of this month, so it can clear the books before the brand is retired at the end of 2020.

The car maker had asked dealers to report most of their stock as sold by the end of last month, but some late deliveries prompted an extension.

It is unclear exactly how many cars are left in Holden’s skeleton showroom network, however numerous dealer sources estimate approximately 500 or fewer new vehicles remain for sale.

Dealer sources estimate more than half the dealerships have taken down Holden signage, have closed, or have installed new brands in their place.

In February 2020, Holden issued a bulletin to dealers offering discounts of up to $17,000 on certain models to clear stock.

In the bulletin, which described the discounts as "aggressive", Holden advised while the information "is not final, and subject to change, it should provide some valuable insight as to our current planning for the ... wind-down period."

However, it is at each dealer’s discretion how much of the discount is passed on to customers.

Dealers are also free to set vehicle delivery fees, which can vary drive-away prices by thousands of dollars.

Drive has obtained the Holden dealer bulletin that outlines the exact discounts offered line by line, model by model.

While most cars have already been sold, the discounts still apply to new cars in Holden dealer stock.

Research by Drive found some dealers passed on most of the discount to clear cars early and install new brands into Holden showrooms, while other dealers tried to withhold a large portion of the discount to boost profitability, and so they could continue trading for as long as possible.

The discounts Holden offered to dealers model by model are listed below.

As reported earlier, General Motors will retain a presence in Australia, even after the Holden brand is retired.

In addition to establishing General Motors Specialty Vehicles (GMSV) to sell models such as the Chevrolet Silverado (converted to right-hand-drive locally) and Chevrolet Corvette (factory-built in right-hand-drive) through a small dealer network, GM’s local operations will oversee parts, service and warranty back up for “at least 10 years” for the remaining fleet of Holden cars on local roads.
