Fully-electric MG B Roadster set to go into production next year

British car restorer and converter, RBW EV Classic Cars, has unveiled its latest creation, turning a classic MG B Roadster into an electric car.

Although still in prototype form, the plan is to build 30 examples with each priced at £90,000 (AU$164,000) plus applicable taxes.

The RBW MG B comes standard with six lithium-ion batteries, although can be optioned with up to eight batteries to improve range.

With six batteries under the bonnet, RBW claims the MG B has a range of 257km. Adding a seventh battery increases that range to 322km. No range is quoted with an eighth battery on board. Recharging takes eight hours.

Power is sent to a rear-mounted electric motor putting out 70kW. The 0-96km/h (60mph) claim is 9.0 seconds while top speed is rated at 129km/h.

The electric system is designed and engineered by Zytek Automotive, a wholly-owned subsidiary of German automotive giant, Continental AG.

Under the brand new bodyshell, the MG B enjoys modern underpinnings including a bespoke double wishbone suspension set-up and a regenerative braking system. Despite looking period correct, the headlights are LED while at the rear, where the fuel filler cap once was, resides the charging point.

The modernity continues inside with a leather interior, satellite navigation via a Pioneer 7.0-inch touchscreen, two USB points, a modern instrument cluster, and electric windows.

There are 14 colour choices, six wheel options and a choice of soft- or hardtop roof.

RBW EV Classic Cars has also stated it is working on a fixed-roof MG B GT version, while its website states it can fit a full electric drivetrain to your Jaguar E-Type.
