2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross revealed

The 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has been announced, with a new design to accompany the model's mid-life update.

The chassis on the new Eclipse Cross has been revised, with Mitsubishi fine-tuning the suspension and upgrading the rear shock absorbers, which it says improves handling characteristics.

But the most noticeable change is to the exterior design, with a sharper look bringing the small SUV further into line with the Japanese brand's striking design language.

A new alternating-pattern mesh grille design is featured up front, flanked by slender new LED daytime lamps that replace the larger headlights of the outgoing model – leaving the lower lighting assembly to act as driving lights.

The new-look Eclipse Cross also gets a redesigned hatch and rear window for improved visibility, integrating with updated tail-lights that again stretch to a point at the top of the glass.

The Eclipse Cross has also received a light interior update, delivering a more sophisticated feel over the outgoing model.

A prominent centre display houses the 8.0-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, while the previous model's touchpad has been discarded, adding additional storage for front occupants.

Drive

The first models are arriving into Australia in November with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine (which produces 110kW and 250Nm in its current form), matched to a CVT automatic gearbox with all-wheel drive.

A plug-in hybrid powertrain is coming in late 2021, featuring a 2.4-litre non-turbo petrol four-cylinder mated to electric motors mounted on each axle. While details remain scarce, it's expected the Eclipse Cross PHEV will use a similar drivetrain to the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Though the line-up hasn't been fully revealed, the body-kit in the photos suggests a sporty plug-in hybrid GSR variant could be in the works for Australia.

Full pricing and specification for the 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be announced at the model's launch in November 2020.
