Peter Brock’s championship-winning 1980 Holden VB Commodore to be auctioned

The iconic Commodore cemented its place in Australian folklore with Peter Brock behind the wheel, and it's coming up for sale.

One of the most iconic cars in Australian motorsports history is set to go under the hammer.

Peter Brock's famous Marlboro-liveried 1980 Holden VB Commodore HDT '05' racing car – the very car he won the 1980 Australian Touring Car Championship in – will be auctioned in late October.

Prior to racing, this was the car used as the prototype vehicle to develop and produce the rules set by the country's motorsports body, CAMS.

On its debut season in 1980, Brock took eight consecutive race wins in the car and secured himself the championship title.

It was Brock's third and final year winning the Australian Touring Car Championship, and the last Commodore to win the championship until 1994, making this a particularly special vehicle. The ATCC later morphed into the V8 Supercars, and is now known simply as Supercars.

Other big names have also driven this VB Commodore over the years, including Allan Moffat, Ron Harrop, and Larry Perkins, while it's ownership history is comprehensive and diverse.

Thanks to bolt-on panels, the car was transformed into a VC variant of the Commodore, as well as a VH, VK, and finally a VL as a back-up and promotional vehicle for the 1988 ATCC season.

For 15 years thereafter the car sat in storage, before it was sold in 2003 as "an old Group A car". After the full history of the car was unearthed, it was restored to its original 1980 Group C championship-winning specification.

The 1980 Holden VB Commodore will be auctioned by Burns & Co on Sunday the 25th of October 2020 in Bayswater, Victoria. You can visit the company's website by clicking here.

In 2018, Brock’s 1982 Bathurst-winning Commodore sold at auction for $2.1 million – the highest price ever paid for an Australian made car to date.
