2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV price and specs: GSR model added to line-up

Mitsubishi's plug-in hybrid SUV has been updated for 2021, and gets a new sporty variant with an old nameplate.

  • 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV range increases
  • Price rises for ES, but gains safety tech as standard
  • Sporty GSR model gets European-tuned Bilstein suspension
  • Priced from $47,990 before on-road costs to $56,490 plus on-road costs

The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been announced, with the updated range gaining a new variant.

Sitting between the entry-level ES and range-topping Exceed models is the new sporty GSR, which brings a number of visual and suspension upgrades to the plug-in hybrid Outlander PHEV.

As previously reported, the new Outlander gets a price increase of $600 with the updates – but with it comes a new suite of safety gear as standard. The range kicks off with the ES at $47,990 plus on-road costs, with the premium Exceed model priced at $56,490 plus on-road costs.

All 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV models are fitted with a 2.4-litre petrol four-cylinder engine producing 94kW/199Nm.

A 13.8kWh battery pack powers two electric motors – 60kW at the front and 70kW at the rear – to provide a claimed 54 kilometres of pure-electric driving, based on the older, more lenient, NEDC consumption testing standard.

Charging the Outlander PHEV takes around seven hours on a Type 1 plug, three hours on a Type 2, or as little as 25 minutes on a DC fast charger. The model also has 'Vehicle-to-Home' (V2H) capability, allowing it to deploy electricity into the home or the grid when needed.

All Outlanders get a smart key with one-touch start, heated seats, and Mitsubishi's Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which offers adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic high-beams headlights. Previously, ADAS was an option for the entry-level ES.

This is in addition to forward collision warning and autonomous braking, rear parking sensors, and rear camera.

Moving from the ES to the GSR, buyers gain blind-spot warning, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and front parking sensors, while the Exceed adds unintended acceleration mitigation, and 360-degree cameras.

As previously mentioned, the GSR brings a sportier flavour to the Outlander PHEV line-up, with Bilstein premium monotube shock absorbers providing superior handling characteristics, developed and tuned in Europe.

The GSR also features a number of visual differences, with black highlights on the grille, bumpers, mirrors, roof, and tailgate, and 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels. Fog lights and auto-levelling LED headlights complete the look.

Inside, the blacked-out theme continues, with piano black trim, black accented shifter knob, black headliner and A-pillar trim, as well as silver contrast stitching on the armrest, door trim, and steering wheel. Seats are trimmed in synthetic leather and suede, while the driver gets an electric seat. Also standard is an eight-speaker premium audio system and power tailgate.

Above the GSR sits the Exceed, which loses the Bilstein shocks, but gets colour-matched roof and rear spoiler, chrome exterior highlights, headlight washer jets, speed limit information display, leather seats, and an electric sunroof.

The 2021 Outlander ES and Exceed are available in Starlight white, Titanium grey, Ruby black, and Red Diamond, while the GSR is only offered in white, grey, and red – all with a black roof and rear spoiler.

The next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander is expected to be announced in the first quarter of 2021, but won't land in Australia until the end of next year.

All Mitsubishi models are now offered with a conditional 10-year/200,000km warranty.
