2021 McLaren hybrid supercar confirmed

McLaren has confirmed its next-generation supercar will be launched in the first half of 2021.

The vehicle – which does not yet have an official model name – will be the first built on the brand’s MCLA carbon fibre lightweight architecture.

A V6 hybrid powertrain differentiates the car from all of its McLaren on-road predecessors, which have used twin-turbo V8 motors in recent times. Performance figures for the hybrid V6 are yet to be announced.

According to the British sports car manufacturer, zero-emission driving will be possible for medium-range journeys.

“This all-new McLaren supercar is the distillation of everything we have done to date; all that we have learned and achieved,” said McLaren CEO, Mike Flewitt.

“This is a new kind of McLaren for a new era, an extraordinary drivers’ car that offers blistering performance as well as an all-electric range capable of covering most urban journeys.”

“We see this new McLaren as a true ‘next generation’ supercar and cannot wait to show it to customers.”

No pricing details have been confirmed, however the hybrid will sit between the McLaren GT ($399,995 plus on road costs) and the McLaren 720S ($489,900 plus on road costs) in the brand's line-up.

Therefore, it is expected start in the mid-$400,000 range before on road costs are applied.

The model is expected to compete with Ferrari's own upcoming hybrid V6 creation, which has been spied testing in recent months.
