2021 Hyundai i20 N teased ahead of Australian launch

A pair of new teaser images of the 2021 Hyundai i20 N have been handed down.

The i20 N will be powered by the same 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine that drives the bigger N Line 'warm' models, producing the same 150kW and a slightly better 275Nm (up from 265Nm).

By comparison, Ford's hero Fiesta ST is driven by a 147kW/290Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, while the VW Polo GTI's 2.0-litre turbo petrol four offers 147kW and 320Nm.

Like the Fiesta ST, the i20 N will be offered in six-speed manual form, giving the Volkswagen an edge in the sales race.

This latest N car will be the first i20 seen in Australia since the first-generation model left our market in 2015 – around a year after the second-gen model was revealed for Europe – leaving the more cheaply sourced Accent to continue in its stead.

In their regular forms, the now retired second- and newly launched third-generation i20 hatches were both deemed too costly for an Australian launch, but – as Ford determined with the Fiesta ST – a business case could more easily be made for the new i20 N hero.
