Volvo will launch a small all-electric SUV to sit below the XC40 in its range, according to a new report from AutoExpress UK.

The outlet claims the manufacturer's CEO – Håkan Samuelsson – confirmed the project in a private discussion.

Likely badged as the XC20, the vehicle will reportedly be based on Geely’s newly-unveiled EV Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA).

Fellow Geely marques Lynk & Co, Polestar, and Proton are also expected to utilise this modular platform.

Volvo filed to trademark several variations of the XC name – including XC10 and XC20 – all the way back in 2011, however it has not officially confirmed a designation for the upcoming SUV.

A spokesperson for the manufacturer's Australia division was unable to confirm the rumour, however told Drive the SEA platform would definitely be compatible with a smaller electric SUV configuration.

“If that’s the way we go, I think it’d still be a few years away," the representative added.

Volvo's first fully-electric car – the XC40 Recharge P8 – is set to come onto the local market in late 2020, and the manufacturer presently offers a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) range comprising the XC90, XC60, S60, and V60.
