2022 Subaru BRZ leaked, teased for November 19 debut – UPDATE

Subaru's new BRZ coupe, and likely its Toyota twin too, is nearing its global debut – but don't expect it here for a while yet.

UPDATE, November 5 2020: Subaru has launched a teaser website for the upcoming "all-new" 2022 Subaru BRZ, offering a first clear and undisguised look at the coupe's new headlight design. (I reckon our man Theo did a great job, even if he missed the squared-off inside edge of the headlight shape.)

The '2022' model year described above, comes direct from Subaru – which, per the model-year conventions of the US market, could suggest the actual on-sale date in the United States will not occur the second quarter or second half of 2021.

CarAdvice has contacted Subaru Australia for details on local timing, and we'll update this story as word comes through. Earlier reports suggested a late 2021 debut is likely for our market, so the MY22 code will likely prove accurate for us too.

The website confirms an official unveiling date of November 18 in the US, which – if the event occurs at 9am New York time as the website suggests – will work out to 1am on November 19 in Australia.

The teaser website also features a short video clip that offers a clear look at the new BRZ's large cooling duct in the front wheel arch. You can watch the video at the website here, or in a lower resolution below.

As for the BRZ's Toyota 86 twin, the global debut timing around that one remains a mystery for now, although our earlier story suggests both will hit Australia around the same time.

UPDATE, October 6: A series of new behind-the-scenes photos, sneakily snapped at the invite-only SubieFest event for the new 2022 Subaru BRZ, offer a glimpse of the new coupe's silhouette.

These images, posted to enthusiast website GR86.org, offer the best look yet at the 2022 BRZ's overall shape, along with its headlights and front outboard intakes.

We've included the rest of the spy photos below, but this article is otherwise unchanged.

October 5, 2020: The "all-new" 2021 Subaru BRZ has been announced for an Autumn unveiling in the US market, confirming we'll see the new coupe revealed in the coming weeks.

No other details have been revealed at this stage, apart from a teaser photo that shows the BRZ – a twin to Toyota's 86 coupe – sitting on the new Toyota GR Yaris hot hatch's 10-spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels.

Although not yet announced, we can likely expect the BRZ's Toyota 86 twin to make its own debut around the same time – if not sooner.

The timing of the new BRZ's unveiling would suggest a 2021 model-year, but CarAdvice understands anticipated delays – possibly COVID-related – will see both the new 86 and BRZ coupes land in Australia towards the end of next year.

The new coupe twins have been spied testing in light camouflage in recent months, and CarAdvice has produced Toyota 86- and BRZ STI-badged renderings that you can check out here.
