2022 Renault Trafic facelift leaked in patent filing

The updated Renault Trafic has surfaced in patent images, revealing a sleeker design for the van.

The 2022 Renault Trafic has emerged in patent filings, providing the first look at the van's updated design.

The sleeker front headlights bring the front-end of the Trafic into line with the rest of the Renault model range, and marks the first major facelift since its global release in 2014.

At the back of the van, the tail-lights appear as if they may be getting an upgrade to LED units, while the majority of the rear-end carries over from the current model.

In late July 2020, CarAdvice reported on an expected facelift for the 2022 Renault Trafic, which will likely include a suite of new safety tech.

Renault Australia's marketing director, Felix Boulin, said at the time: "We are working on a facelifted version of Trafic which is … aiming for 2022 and that’s when we will come with all of the advanced safety aids such as (autonomous emergency braking)."

The patent images show everything from the windscreen pillar forward will be getting a change to accommodate the facelift, and further distinguishing itself from the Mitsubishi Express. However, it too may adopt similar changes, but with Mitsubishi grille badging.

Despite the Mitsubishi Express being a rebadged Renault Trafic, the Mitsubishi has so far struggled to gain a foothold in the commercial van segment locally.

Until September 2020, Mitsubishi had sold just 210 Express vans for the year – less than a quarter of the number of Renault Trafic vans sold over the same period.
