2021 Lexus LC500 Convertible price and specs – UPDATE: Australian photos

Lexus's beautiful LC500 coupe gets a droptop sibling with an Australian introduction this week of the LC500 Convertible – along with a very limited edition.

  • 2021 Lexus LC500 Convertible on sale in Australia from $214,000
  • Only 10 examples of the Limited Edition coming to Australia
  • Same monstrous 5.0-litre V8 engine that drives the coupe

UPDATE: Lexus has at last made Australian photography available. With the exception of the roof-up photo at the bottom of this story, all images in this piece are now Australian-market cars – and we couldn't resist reviving the story.

September 30, 2020: Australian pricing and details for the 2021 Lexus LC500 Convertible have been announced today, following the June arrival of an updated LC Coupe range.

Available now, the LC500 Convertible's Australian-market debut follows its May confirmation, November 2019 unveiling and its initial debut as a thinly-veiled concept back in January of the same year.

While the well-regarded Coupe can be had for a touch less than $200,000 before on-road costs, the privilege of topless motoring in a Lexus LC will relieve you of $214,000 – again before on-road costs.

The (not unusual) premium is unlikely to upset buyers, however, thanks to its exclusivity factor – but an even more exclusive Limited Edition model is available from $234,000, detailed further down in this story.

In developing the LC Convertible, Lexus says it worked to ensure buyers were robbed of none of the benefits offered in the Coupe's cabin – namely, space.

With its "compact and lightweight" aluminium and magnesium roof structure, the LC500 Convertible's headroom falls just 11 and 4mm short of the coupe's front and rear space, respectively.

That roof can be lowered in 15 seconds at speeds up to 50km/h – which, incidentally, is around 5 seconds faster than in the old (and completely unrelated) IS 250C.

As with all convertibles, effort has been made to compensate for the missing roof structure through additional underbody bracing and shear panel – while at the same time benefiting from a lower centre of gravity.

As with the LC500 coupe, power in the LC500 Convertible is provided by a naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 engine delivering 351kW at 7100rpm and 540Nm at 4800rpm.

The big V8 is matched to a ten-speed automatic transmission, mechanical limited-slip differential and a rear-wheel drive configuration.

The LC500 Convertible weighs in at 2035kg, with an official combined fuel consumption figure of 12.7L/100km.

Standard equipment with the LC500 includes:

  • 21-inch forged-alloy two-tone wheels

In its 10-car Limited Edition specification, the LC500 Convertible comes in the company's special Structural Blue, matched to a white-and-blue semi-aniline leather-accented interior and unique Limited Edition scuff plates.

Regarding this $20,000 premium special, Lexus says:

Structural Blue pursues an extraordinary visual experience by harnessing a newly developed structural colour pigment the result of an intensive 15-year research project.

Compared with existing blue pigments - where light is absorbed once and blue light reflected - a multi-layer construction enhances the interference effect on the light to reflect higher luminescence and saturation.

Conventional pigment paints reflect less than 50 per cent of incoming light as a visible blue colour, but with Structural Blue the level is nearly 100 per cent.

Structural Blue was inspired by the shimmering blue wings of the American Morpho butterfly and incorporates 300 billion nano-structure (super-small) pigment flakes that generate iridescence, giving the impression of the colour constantly changing with the light.

While the Morpho butterfly is renowned for the iridescent blue of its wings, they are actually colourless. The blue seen by the human eye is created by light interference on the microscopic lattice surface structure of the butterfly's wings.

Similarly, Structural Blue paint is designed to work on the eye rather than on a camera lens; it is only when it is seen 'in the flesh' that the amazing effect becomes clear.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story reported that only 10 examples of the LC500 will come to Australia. Rather, only 10 examples of the Limited Edition model are allocated to Australia, with the LC500 Convertible's availability otherwise unrestricted.
