Images of new Ford Equator surface online in China

Images of the new seven-seater Ford Equator have emerged online ahead of the model's release.

The Chinese-market SUV cements the styling themes for JMC-Ford – the Blue Oval's joint venture in the country – which looks to be an evolution of the design language seen on other models from the company.

The pictures were posted on the social media website Weibo, along with what appears to be internal Ford documents outlining the model's specifications.

Powered by a 2.0-litre 'EcoBoost' turbo four-cylinder producing 165kW, the Equator is expected to target the Toyota Kluger (known as the Highlander) and Hyundai's Chinese Santa Fe model, which differs from the Australian version.

With the likelihood of a seven-seater Escape just around the corner, Ford Australia has confirmed there are "no plans" to bring the Equator to Australia.
