2021 BMW M3, M4 show off their M Performance enhancements

The high-performance BMW M variants are expected to arrive in Australian showrooms during the first quarter of 2021.

The 2021 BMW M3 Sedan and M4 Coupé will be offered with an unprecedented range of M Performance Parts aesthetic and performance accessories, however not all of them will necessarily be offered in Australia.

BMW unveiled its competitors to the Audi RS4/RS5, Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, and Mercedes-AMG C63 earlier this week, powered by a retuned version of the 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six powertrain from the X3 M and X4 M.

A Competition variant – delivering 375kW and featuring an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission – will be offered alongside the entry level 353kW 6-speed manual.

Even before the new-generation cars turn a wheel in customers hands, BMW has unveiled a supporting range of accessories, set to go on sale alongside the performance pair for owners who wish to customise their vehicles further.

An optional four-pipe titanium silencer exhaust system is reportedly five kilograms lighter than its equivalent mass-produced component, and will further improve performance thanks to optimised gas routing.

Its four ceramic-coated tailpipes are diagonally stacked, and sit in the centre of a large carbon-fibre diffuser.

Earlier this month CarAdvice reported that an M4 had been spied testing with an obscure rear-end set-up, and speculated that it could be a GTS variant of the car.

However, it appears this was actually a prototype for the aforementioned optional M Performance exhaust system.

Meanwhile, a sports coilover suspension pack permits an variable reduction of ride height of between five and twenty millimetres, and improves handling with a lowered centre of gravity and reduced roll.

The M Performance sports brake pads allows shorter braking distances and higher thermal resistance.

A wide array of carbon fibre accessories are also on offer, including a front splitter (below the car's polarising "coffin grille"), rear winglets, spoiler, and aero flicks.

M Performance adhesive foils in the M division's traditional blue, red and purple combo are available to adorn the bodysides.

The standard equipment M3 and M4 wheels are 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear, however cross-spoke forged 1000M alloys are also available – these step up to 20 inches at the front and 21 inches at the rear.

Moving to the interior, customers can option doorsill carbon inserts and coloured stitching.

Furthermore, M Performance front and rear floor mats are available, as are carbon and Alcantara trim options.

Centre console-mounted kneepads round off the feature range.

A spokesperson for BMW Australia told CarAdvice that not all options had yet been officially confirmed for the local market, however expressed interest in importing as many parts as possible.

They said further details and pricing will be announced in the first quarter of 2021, prior to showroom arrivals.
