2021 Range Rover Velar price and specs: Mild-hybrid rollout continues

The Velar is the latest to introduce JLR’s 48V mild-hybrid tech

  • New, simplified line-up
  • Safety spec improved across the range
  • Mild-hybrid diesel and six-cylinder engines added
  • Priced from $87,000 - $127,000

Jaguar Land Rover has announced the latest updates to its 2021 Range Rover Velar range in Australia, following in the footsteps of models like the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar F-Pace before it.

A simpler model-walk aims to take some of the complexities out of the purchasing experience with the previous four trim levels, two design lines, and eight available engines (excluding the high performance SVO model) stripped back to just five variants.

For the 2021 model year, Land Rover’s R-Dynamic appearance package comes standard, and model variants have been trimmed to three: S, SE and HSE.

Engine variants have been pared back to three available options, four-cylinder petrol, four-cylinder diesel and six-cylinder petrol.

Drive

The carry-over 2.0-litre turbocharged P250 engine opens the range with outputs of 184kW and 365Nm, fuel consumption rated as low as 9.4L/100km and 0-100km/h acceleration of 7.5 seconds.

Next in line is the D200 MHEV 2.0-litre turbo diesel, with 150kW and 430Nm linked, as the name suggests, to a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Fuel consumption is rated at 6.3L/100km while acceleration is a slightly slower 8.2 seconds to 100km/h

The range-topping engine, for now, is a new P400 inline six-cylinder engine seen elsewhere in the Land Rover range. Like the D200, the P400 uses a 48V mild-hybrid system, plus an electric supercharger and twin-scroll turbo for outputs of 294Kw and 550Nm, allowing a 5.5-second 0-100km/h sprint and an official fuel consumption of 9.8L/100km.

The entry-level Velar R-Dynamic S is available solely with the P250 engine, mid-spec SE models offer a choice of P250, D200 or P400 engines, while the flagship HSE is matched exclusively to the P400 engine.

Six-cylinder models also come standard with air suspension.

Standard features see the new Pivi Pro dual 10-inch touchscreen step in for the previous InControl infotainment system, allowing 'software over the air' (SOTA) updates and dual 4G/LTE modems.

Thanks to its own power supply, Pivi Pro can quick-start, meaning users don't need to wait for the system to boot and can use it straight away.

The system also allows two phones to be connected via Bluetooth at once, can use its embedded sim for music streaming from Spotify, Deezer and TuneIn, and offers live maps, weather and traffic updates. The system is also compatible with linked Microsoft and Google calendars.

Cabin comfort has been improved with the addition of Active Road Noise Cancellation.

Inside the cabin, the previous rotary gear selector dial has been replaced with a new ‘tactile’ drive selector. The steering wheel adopts a new design with integrated smart buttons, compatible with SOTA updates for the driver assist functions.

New advanced cabin filtration is available as an option, including an active carbon filter, to remove unpleasant odours and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and a purify function to reduce allergens and particulates within the cabin, down to PM2.5 in size.

All Velar models come standard with adaptive cruise control, blind-spot assist with rear collision monitor and rear cross-traffic alert, plus wade sensing for use in water crossings.

A 360-degree camera system is also standard, allowing 3D surround view and a virtual peer-through bonnet via ClearSight Ground View.

Range Rover has also upgraded its Activity Key. The wearable fob allows users to leave their key behind (previously the key needed to be kept in the vehicle) and can lock, unlock, and start the vehicle, along with adding an LCD watch function.

Smartphone users are able to lock and unlock, heat and cool the cabin, check fuel levels and vehicle location and more through a new JLR’s Remote App.

Externally, the design of the Velar R-Dynamic remains the same, though wheels designs have been updated.

There's been no mention yet of any incoming replacement for the 5.0-litre supercharged Velar P550 SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, which falls under the umbrella of Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations division.

Australian deliveries are expected to begin in March 2021.
