Latest BMW M revealed, and it only has two wheels
BMW Motorrad has revealed the M 1000 RR, the first motorcycle from the company to officially wear the M designation.
The 2021 BMW M 1000 RR has been revealed, and it's the first proper two-wheeled model to officially wear the fabled M badge.
The news comes on the heels of the launch of the BMW M3 sedan and M4 coupe, making it the third M vehicle to be released within 24 hours.
While the company did release an M Package for the BMW S 1000 RR back in 2018 – which included a number of M-branded performance parts – this latest model is the first official motorcycle from BMW M.
Based heavily on the S 1000 RR, BMW's M division worked on the bike's engine, brakes, handling, and aerodynamics, all with the intention of on-track performance.
Referred to as the M RR, the 1.0-litre four-cylinder engine uses titanium valves and conrods to help achieve 156kW and 113Nm, while a weight of 192kg has been met thanks to the widespread use of carbon-fibre.
Winglets at the front of the motorcycle are said to aid downforce, improving cornering stability and reducing the M RR's propensity to perform wheelies – which also lessens the need for the traction control to interfere.
The new M RR is arguably more aligned with the origins of the M badge (originally short for 'Motorsport') than many of its modern counterparts, as it's understood the bike has been designed to meet homologation standards for international racing – including the Australian Superbike Championship series.
A limited number of BMW M 1000 RR motorbikes will be offered locally in early 2021, with pricing expected to exceed $50,000, or roughly double the price of the S 1000 RR on which it's based.
