REVISIT: 2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost Extended: $740,000 Rolls makes its Australian debut

Lengthened version now available to order, with customer deliveries expected to commence during the first quarter of 2021

It's Halloween, and this is a GHOST! So, we couldn't resist a revisit.

September 24: Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has launched its new Ghost Extended in Australia. This lengthened-version comes off the back of the all-new Ghost's global reveal earlier in September.

According to Rolls-Royce, the Ghost Extended caters for a "dynamic group of entrepreneurs" who "expressed a desire for a chauffeur-driven business tool for the week that can transform into a serenely comfortable and dynamic self-driven saloon at the weekend". In other words, the brand has focussed its efforts on increasing the opulence of the Ghost's second row.

It starts with a wheelbase that has been lengthened by 17cm, which Rolls-Royce claims is just enough to ensure the Ghost Extended offers the most legroom of any four-seat sedan currently on sale (the brand makes no mention of its own Phantom Extended).

Engineers at Rolls-Royce managed to achieve this while retaining the original lines from the standard wheelbase car, by cleverly disguising the extra body length into its doors and their apertures.

By opting for the Ghost Extended, one also gains access to specification items which are both unique to the long-wheelbase version, and unique to this new-generation car.

For the first time, as per the larger Rolls-Royce Phantom, the option of 'Serenity seating' has now been extended to the entry-level Ghost range.

On top of the decadent reclining and massaging rear seats, which Rolls-Royce claims are similar to that of a "business jet cabin environment", Serenity seating also introduces a fixed rear centre with champagne cooler.

A master sommelier was consulted during the design phase, advising that non-vintage champagnes are best served at six degrees centigrade, and vintage champagnes at 11. The decanter area, complete with a pair of flutes, naturally cools to either of these temperatures.

If champagne isn't your thing, 'Serenity seating' includes a whiskey decanter setup, too.

Rolls-Royce have imported a pre-production Ghost Extended into Australia, which CarAdvice spent some time with in a static environment.

This particular car has been specified with a few more Ghost Extended exclusivities, including the rear theatre setup and Rolls-Royce bespoke audio package. Both options are fantastic, and add to the duality of character as claimed by the brand:

"New Ghost is the result of in-depth dialogue with Rolls-Royce’s diverse and global customer base. Many of them asked the marque to create a motor car that provides the indulgence of enhanced rear space with no compromise to driving dynamics.", says Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

"Ghost Extended answers this customer demand by creating a product with duality of purpose that augments both business and lifestyle requirements.”

As per the recently-revealed Ghost model, all other driveline aspects and hardware elements remain as per the regular car. The Ghost Extended is powered by the same twin-turbocharged V12 engine, which produces 420kW of power at 5000rpm, and 850Nm of torque from just 1600rpm.

The brand's new 'Planar suspension' suspension system, which employs the world-first use of an additional, separate upper-a-arm damper, is also carried across into the Ghost Extended model.

Pricing starts from $740,000 before any customisation, options or on-road costs, which is up $10,000 versus the outgoing model.

To provide an idea of what a well-specified car actually costs, the example CarAdvice had the pleasure of exploring was north of $900,000 before on roads.
