Fully-electric Range Rover and Jaguar XJ models confirmed, to be unveiled in late 2020 – report

All-electric Range Rover and Jaguar XJ models have been confirmed for production behind-the-scenes at Jaguar Land Rover, according to a report from British website Autocar.

The publication claims to have viewed transcripts of a recent conference call between JLR Chief Financial Officer Adrian Mardell and company investors, in which Mr Mardell confirmed fully-electric Range Rover and Jaguar XJ models would be unveiled in October and November 2020.

According to the documents, the upcoming vehicle will be based on JLR’s new all-encompassing MLA architecture, and will share components with the next-generation electric Jaguar XJ, announced in late 2019.

A fully-electric Land Rover was reported on in late 2019, but at the time it was not confirmed whether the model would wear the iconic Range Rover badging.

However, a spokesperson for Jaguar Land Rover Australia was unable to confirm the project when approached by CarAdvice.

The COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a massive blow to the already struggling manufacturer.

In the first quarter of 2020, the company posted a pre-tax loss of £422 million (AU$763M), thanks to retail sales falling by 30.9 per cent during the fourth quarter of 2019.

It is now projecting sales of less than 500,000 cars per year, down from 557,706 in 2019.

The transition to a single ubiquitous platform is part of a wider plan to reduce costs, and remain viable with lower production volume.
