2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV teased, coming to Australia

The 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has been teased in a single shadowy image released by the Japanese car company, but the vehicle has been confirmed for arrival before the end of 2020.

The news brings with it confirmation of a plug-in hybrid option for the Eclipse Cross range, with an expectation of the model arriving in the third quarter of 2021.

The 2021 model will mark the model's mid-life update, arriving in the form of a facelifted exterior and refreshed cabin.

The teaser image gives away little, but suggests the exterior styling will be a continuation of the brand's current design language.

Slimmer headlights suggest the upcoming Eclipse Cross will be closer in appearance to Mitsubishi's Concept XR-PHEV II, first revealed in 2015, and shown below.

At this stage no details are known engine details for the Eclipse Cross PHEV, but the plug-in hybrid model could borrow part or all of its powertrain from the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which uses a 2.4-litre petrol engine with two electric motors.

However, with the Outlander PHEV moving from a 2.0-litre to a 2.4-litre in 2019, the change could have been a way of creating some space for a 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid Eclipse Cross, and helping to differentiate two SUVs within Mitsubishi's line-up.
