2021 Hummer EV to get ‘crab mode’ four-wheel steering

The 2021 Hummer EV will be capable of driving diagonally thanks to a 'crab mode' four-wheel steering system, GMC has revealed.

In a promotional video posted to YouTube, the General Motors truck division demonstrated the technology alongside a less-than-cryptic slogan “Sometimes the biggest leaps forward are actually diagonal”.

However, the clip indicates the feature will be an optional extra, rather than fitted as standard.

It is not yet clear if the Hummer EV will be capable of traditional opposed four-wheel steering (in which the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels for improved low-speed manoeuvrability), however, considering a rear steering rack is already required to facilitate 'crab mode', this is highly likely.

The unique steering capability could make the vehicle much easier to park, as well as providing greater maneuverability in off-road scenarios.

As reported earlier by Drive, the Hummer EV will be available as a twin cab pick-up or SUV wagon. Offered with one, two, or three electric motors, the top-end variant will produce 745kW and 15,592Nm at the wheels.

This is enough to launch the truck from zero to 100km/h in around three seconds.

If these reported figures are accurate, the Hummer will be one of the most powerful and quickest SUV models ever produced, and one of the torquiest production cars of all time.

Drive

GMC says the electric Hummer is capable of 'super fast charging', and will have a maximum range of 640km.

With an official launch slated for 20 October 2020, deliveries are scheduled to begin in late 2021.

Although unconfirmed for Australia, it is understood the Hummer EV may eventually make its way down under via the GMSV brand.
