2021 Hyundai Tucson N performance SUV: Leaked power figures

According to images released on Korean website Autospy, the Hyundai Tucson N will use a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 213kW and 422Nm.

The transmission is likely to be an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with all-wheel drive.

While the upcoming 2021 Hyundai Tucson range was always expected to receive an N-Line variant with some sporty attributes, this leak is the first indication of a fully-fledged Tucson N.

The car company's Australian arm is remaining tight-lipped about the Tucson N, but told Drive: "Hyundai President Mr Albert Biermann has previously stated that he would consider a broad range of products as suitable for N high performance development, across all model lines, including SUVs".

Prior to joining Hyundai, Mr Biermann was the head of BMW's M performance division, and personally oversaw the development of the twin-turbo BMW E70 X5 M.

"We've made no secret of our focus on building an N performance family. We will of course be studying the business case for any new N product should it become available," the Hyundai Australia spokesperson told Drive in a written statement.

The leak appears to have come from internal Hyundai documents, outlining the performance figures and production dates for a number of new models.

Below the Tucson N will sit the N-Line, and despite the expectation of an N-Line version of the Tucson, the document offers previously unknown information about the model's powertrain.

According to the leak, it's possible the Hyundai Tucson N-Line will be offered exclusively with a 1.6-litre hybrid powertrain – likely to be the same to be offered in the Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid.

Another document posted also confirmed a plug-in hybrid version of the Tucson, likely to be identical to the powertrain found in the Santa Fe.

An official unveiling of the Hyundai Tucson range is expected next week, but word on the Tucson N may happen at a later date – however, it's possible the model could be reserved for left-hand-drive markets only.
