2021 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid confirmed for Australia

The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid has been confirmed for Australia.

A spokesperson for Hyundai Australia has told Drive the company is aiming to launch the hybrid model in mid-2021, with the model expected to compete with the Toyota Kluger Hybrid arriving earlier in the year.

The Hyundai spokesperson said the business case for a plug-in hybrid powertrain is still being reviewed for our local market.

However, Hyundai Australia has previously said both the hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains for the Santa Fe were on its wishlist.

It's expected the conventional hybrid powertrain will comprise a 1.6-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder coupled with a 44kW electric motor and 1.5kWh battery, producing a total of 169kW/350Nm.

While both front- and all-wheel drive are available in the Santa Fe Hybrid overseas, the drivetrain layout has yet to be confirmed for Australia. The transmission will be a six-speed automatic.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain gets an upgraded 67kW electric motor and 14kWh battery, providing a fully-electric driving range of 40 kilometres (based on the NEDC test cycle), before the 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine takes over.

Local buyers have demonstrated a healthy appetite for electrified models recently, with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid – Drive's Car of the Year and currently Australia's highest-selling car – seeing waiting times of up-to 10 months.
