2021 Qoros 7 SUV ‘starts a new journey’ for the Chinese brand

It’s been a while between releases for the company, but the Qoros 7 points to a revitalised range.

The new Qoros 7 has been unveiled in China, signalling the start of a new line-up for the car manufacturer.

Qoros started life as a Chinese-Israeli brand, conceived with the notion of serving international markets with products aimed at more discerning tastes.

While the brand ramped up quickly, revealing four production cars in a three-year space, little has been heard from Qoros since the 2015 unveiling of the Qoros 5 production SUV and 2017 Model Young concept, a version of the Chery Tiggo 7.

After undergoing a behind-the-scenes ownership restructure, which sees the brand now supported by Chinese and American parent companies, Qoros has unveiled its newest product.

The Qoros 7 SUV relaunches the brand, not only with a new design direction, but also a new brand philosophy.

According to Qoros, the 7 is the perfect fit for Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (the LOHAS demographic). The wording of the press materials accompanying these images, goes to great, colourful lengths to support that marketing angle.

While it might sound a little unusual to western audiences, Qoros suggests the new 7 “brings eternal love and care to Chinese consumers,” allowing them to “be themselves and go a steady and far way in the life.” Righto, then.

The new model was penned under not one, but three design directives, being "Beyond the Edge", "Infinite beauty in details" and "square aesthetics".

Based on expanded underpinnings from the smaller Qoros 5, the Qoros 7 comes with a choice of two turbocharged petrol engines, a 1.6-litre with a suggested 150kW/280Nm or a 170kW/300Nm 1.8-litre. Both list Valvetronic continuously variable valve lift technology within their details, suggesting a connection to BMW’s engine tech of the same name.

A wet dual-clutch seven-speed automatic is the only available transmission. Suspension is via MacPherson front struts with a multi-link independent rear setup, while electric power steering is supplied by Bosch.

The interior is available in napa leather, with variable density front seat foams providing firmer lateral support on the bolsters and soft foam on passenger contact area. A feature Qoros has gone to great lengths to explain, for some reason.

Electrically adjustable heated front seats are also available, as is a massage function for the driver’s 4-in-1 Aerospace Eco Seat. Again, those press materials say is best: “Its rich seat adjustment function is not inferior to luxury cars and totally superior to competitive products of the same kind”.

The driver faces a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, while the infotainment is served by a 14.6-inch central display, backed by a six-core processor, mounted in a floating portrait orientation. Qoros describes Apple and Android compatibility, over the air updates, and Mr.Q smart connection via compatible Android devices.

Cabin air quality management is via PM2.5 filtration with a CN95 air conditioning filter element and an incorporated anion (negative ion) generator.

The Qoros 7 measures in at 4679mm long, 1897mm wide, 1679mm tall, and rides on a 2720mm wheelbase. For a local comparison a Mitsubishi Outlander is just 16mm longer, 87mm narrower, 31mm taller but rides on a 50mm shorter wheelbase.

While in its first set-up stages the Qoros brand announced plans to enter both the Chinese and European markets. With this new relaunch the brand hasn’t made firm any plans outside the Chinese market.

The Qoros 7 is the first on a line of new products with a replacement for the original Qoros 3 sedan and large SUV Qoros 9, plus electric vehicle ranges expected to be rolled out during 2021.
