DeLorean listed for sale in NSW with $88,000 price tag

A DeLorean DMC-12 has been listed for sale in New South Wales, but unfortunately the 1981 original won’t travel through time in its current state.

“I did hit the magic 88mph once on the M4, hoping the cops would have a sense of humour," the vehicle's owner told Drive. “Nothing happened, so I guess it does need plutonium.”

Immortalised as a time machine in the Back to the Future movie, the DMC-12 was produced in Northern Ireland between 1981 and 1983, at which point the manufacturer went spectacularly bankrupt.

Approximately 9000 models were built, and almost all of them – including this example – were left-hand drive.

This particular car has 35,000km on the clock and was built in 1981 and it's listed for sale in Kurrajong on the western fringe of metropolitan Sydney, with a referential price tag of $88,000.

The DeLorean's stainless-steel body was designed by Italian automotive icon Giorgetto Giugiaro, and the car is powered by a 2.85-litre V6 engine producing a humble 97kW and 207Nm.

According to the owner, the vehicle was formerly owned by WWE wrestler Sheamus, who bought it in 2015 for around US$55,000 (approximately AU$75,000).

“It’s an amazing tourist attraction – I’ve got a business, but I could probably make more money out of the people who stop and take photos of the car,” he added.

“It really brings a lot of joy to people.”
