2021 Toyota Yaris Cross launches in Japan, GR Parts and Modellista packages revealed

The upcoming 2021 Toyota Yaris Cross has made its Japanese-market debut this week, giving buyers a look at the wider line-up in its international form.

Coming to Australia in late 2020 as a rival to models like the Hyundai Venue and Mazda CX-3, the Yaris Cross will debut here with a choice of petrol and petrol-electric hybrid powertrains.

In Japan, the Yaris Cross SUV's safety suite will include Full Speed Range Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), and an Adaptive High-beam System (AHS), along with Pre-collision Safety System, Low Speed Acceleration Control, Emergency Steering Assist, and Road Sign Assist (RSA).

We can likely expect the Yaris Cross to launch in a high specification, with a starting price beginning above the new-generation Yaris hatch's $22,130 opening point – although it remains to be seen just how close it will come to the C-HR's $30,915 base. Some overlap is also sure to occur.

Yaris Cross GR Parts, Modellista kits revealed

With this week's Japan-market launch, the Yaris Cross has also been decked out in the usual spread of over-the-top JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) styling pieces.

The Modellista name has been around in the Toyota line-up for some time, while the expanded presence of the GR brand (Gazoo Racing) in both performance and styling represents a relatively new feature of the range.

From the GR Parts catalogue, the Yaris Cross gets some off-road rally-ready style, maintaining its tall profile and sensible 18-inch alloy wheels (though smaller might suit the concept better), with mud guards and a number of new aerodynamic and cladding components.

The Modellista dives straight into road racer territory, with a set of bumper and body add-ons that would look at home in an early instalment of the Fast & Furious film franchise.

The look is rounded out with a new 19-inch wheel design, but, of course, there are no additional performance upgrades for either package.

As with recent Camry and RAV4 packages from TRD/GR and Modellista, we shouldn't expect to see these items offered officially in Australia – but if you want them, there's always a way.
