2021 Mazda BT-50 model range announced

The 2021 Mazda BT-50 range has been announced, with three trim levels available in a combination of drivelines and bodies, headed-up by the dual-cab range initially.

Buyers of the new BT-50, co-developed alongside the recently-launched Isuzu D-Max range, will be able to choose between the entry-level XT, the sportier XTR, or the range-topping GT.

All models are available with a style-side tub – referred to by Mazda as a 'pickup' body – while the more fleet-focussed XT also offers a dual-cab chassis option, allowing a tray or box to be fitted.

Late 2020 will see the BT-50 range gain space-cab variants – to be referred to as the 'freestyle' body by Mazda, with rear hinged back doors allowing easier access to the rear seats – while a single-cab body is expected in early 2021.

The XT cab chassis also gets heavy-duty leaf springs on the live (rigid) rear axle, bumping payload capacities up (see table below).

Rear-wheel drive models are available in XT and XTR specification with the flagship GT grade exclusively available with four-wheel drive.

All Mazda BT-50 models are powered by a 3.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder producing 140kW/450Nm, with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic available across the 4x4 range.

Those opting for the 4x2 models are available only automatic transmission.

Fuel consumption for the new BT-50 ranges from a claimed 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres combined in the automatic RWD pickup and manual 4WD pickup, and up to 8.0L/100km in the cab chassis and automatic 4WD pickup bodies.
