BMW, Kia, and Hyundai sweep US customer surveys

The annual J.D. Power survey for quality and appeal has named BMW, Kia, and Hyundai as the best car makers, according to US motorists.

Two owner studies were conducted, determining the quality of the vehicle and the overall appeal.

The results follow the research firm's 'dependability' study in February 2020, in which Hyundai's luxury arm Genesis took the honours.

While these new results were awarded to a number of models not available in Australia, of those sold locally, the Audi A3 and Genesis G70 were ranked as among the best passenger cars for both quality and appeal.

The Nissan Maxima sedan ranked highly for both quality and appeal in the large car segment. Australia never received the current Maxima, with Nissan pulling the model from their local line-up in 2013.

The Ford Ranger ranked highly in the pick-up segment for quality, while the Ram 1500 was listed as one of the best pick-ups for overall appeal.

For both quality and appeal, the BMW X6 and Jaguar E-Pace topped the list of the best SUVs.

In a third study looking into technology by manufacturers, Volvo ranked highest for innovation and advanced tech, followed by BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Genesis.

In tech, Hyundai led for 'excellence of execution', followed by Subaru, Kia, Nissan, and Ram.

But for overall quality and appeal, Germany's BMW, along with Korean brands Kia and Hyundai kept appearing as the best cars to buy in their respective divisions.

Based on the J.D. Power results, we've compiled a list showing all the models available – or soon to be available – in Australia, omitting a number of American vehicles not offered locally by manufacturers.
