BMW 5 Series ute for sale

A BMW 5 Series ute conversion has been listed on Ebay for $US30,000 (approximately $AU41,700).

Unfortunately for Australian ute lovers however, it's left-hand drive and happens to be located in the Russian city of Kursk. And shipping isn’t included in the price.

According to the listing, the 2000 BMW E39 530d is in “excellent condition,” and has leather seats, a leather multi-function steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, and a trip computer.

It’s powered by a 2.9-litre straight-six turbo diesel engine producing 134kW and 390Nm. This is paired with a five-speed automatic gearbox.

The ad claims the vehicle has done just 8000km, however it is unclear if this is an outright figure or post-conversion.

Few details are provided about the conversion process, however it reportedly took four years from beginning to end.

This isn't the first E39 to be converted into a ute, with Australian golfer Stuart Appleby creating his own M5 ute. The conversion was completed just in time for the 2008 Deni Ute Muster.

BMW has also tried its hand at a few utes. The first was based off an E30 320iS, and was used at the BMW factory as a workhorse for nearly three decades.

In 2011 BMW designed and built a one-off E92 M3 ute, however the prototype was later revealed to be an elaborate April Fools' joke.

In 2019 the German manufacturer unveiled a BMW X7 Pick-up concept car, which was pitched as a rival to the Mercedes-Benz X-Class.
