Michael Jordan’s old Mercedes-Benz S600 fetched an impressive price at auction

Michael Jordan's 1996 Mercedes-Benz S600 has sold for US$202,200 (AU$279,275) at auction, despite the bidding kicking off at a mere US$23 – a tribute to the basketball legend's iconic jersey number.

Although it notched up 252,803km in its lifetime, the V12-powered S600 attracted plenty of interested buyers thanks to its one-of-a-kind custom touches, which include chrome rims and an in-built phone that still bears the NBA star's name.

The auction closed on August 23 after 177 bids, with the final price far exceeding typical sale prices for S-Class cars of the same era, which car valuation site Redbook estimates to sit between $9600 and $12,200.

It also outperformed the original price Jordan paid for the car in 1996, which US-based NADA Guides lists as US$133,300 (plus whatever Jordan paid to have it customised to his liking).

The big black coupe features aesthetic modifications from tuning house Lorinser, but its power figures are otherwise unchanged at 290kW of power and 569Nm of torque from its 6.0-litre, 12-cylinder engine.

The anonymous buyer will also inherit the car's original title, which was signed by Jordan and his then-wife, Juanita.

Listed for sale by Los Angeles-based dealer the Beverly Hills Car Club, the S600 houses basic but comprehensive equipment including air conditioning, heated seats, cruise control, dual airbags, power windows, power steering, power mirrors, power seats, power sunroof, power tilt steering wheel and power mirrors.

The car's impressive sale price may have been boosted by its appearance in the recent Netflix documentary The Last Dance, which followed Jordan's record-breaking stint with the Chicago Bulls as well as showcasing his enviable car collection – including this S600.
