Toyota patents articulated canopy design
The patent application is believed to demonstrate the canopy mechanics for a limited run of street-legal Toyota GR Super Sport hypercars.
Toyota has designed an articulated cockpit canopy potentially destined for an upcoming performance road car, patent documents filed in the USA suggest.
A street-legal version of the 735kW Toyota GR Super Sport concept car has reportedly been in the works for some time, and the recently sighted drawings are likely part of this project.
The pictured car shares distinctive characteristics with the GR Super Sport concept, with a similar sweeping tail and rear wheel arches.
This is, however, speculative. Automotive manufacturers often apply for technology patents that could be years away from production or discarded altogether.
The paperwork, which was filed on February 5, 2020, lists the canopy’s designer as Yasunori Hirozawa.

Such canopies are extremely rare on street-legal cars due to their complexity and impracticality for passengers.
However, several notable concepts and low volume vehicles have incorporated the design.
These include the Holden Hurricane, the Ferrari Modulo, the Bond Bug, the Maserati Birdcage 75th edition, the fighter jet-inspired Lamborghini Egoista, the Peel Trident, as well as the Purvis Eureka and Sterling Nova kit cars.
