2021 Genesis G80 electric car and ‘JW’ electric SUV spy photos

Spies have caught the Genesis G80 EV testing, with other future electric models from the company also spotted

A fully-electric Genesis G80 sedan has been seen testing near the Nurburgring circuit in Germany, with the new variant expected to enter as a rival to the ageing Tesla Model S in the coming months.

The spy shots show a camouflaged new-generation Genesis G80 with a closed-off front 'crest' grille. Electric vehicles do not require cooling in the same fashion as traditional combustion engines, so large front openings are sealed to improve aerodynamics.

The photos also reveal the Genesis does not have a rear muffler, and the evaluation vehicle is driving on alloy wheels borrowed from the flagship G90 sedan.

The prototype is likely undergoing dynamics testing at the famous Nurburgring circuit, as the car was fitted with a roll cage and fixed racing seats.

A spokesperson for Genesis Australia was unable to confirm the electric G80, but told CarAdvice the brand would be introducing its first electric vehicle before the end of 2021.

"Alternative propulsion is at the core of our product development strategy – our goal is to offer alternative propulsion in all segments of our product portfolio," the spokesperson said.

Less than two hours east of where the electric Genesis G80 was found, another electric Genesis model was also spied testing in heavy camouflage.

The Korean Car Blog is reporting on a Genesis 'JW' (an internal code name) spotted near Hyundai's technical centre in Germany, giving us a first glimpse of the small electric SUV.

It's thought the Genesis JW could be the production version of the Genesis Mint concept car (pictured at the bottom of this story), revealed at the 2019 New York Motor Show.

Few details of the Genesis JW have emerged, but the Tesla Model Y competitor will likely be based on the E-GMP platform, being used widely across Hyundai's brands.

Last week Hyundai – parent company of Genesis – revealed a new sub-brand called Ioniq, dedicated to fully-electric models.

In late 2019, Hyundai revealed its plans to offer 23 fully-electrified models in Australia. It hopes to sell more than half-a-million electric vehicles globally through its various brands by 2025.
