2021 Mazda CX-9 updates announced overseas, Australia TBC
The family SUV is set to receive a major boost so the size of its infotainment screen, amongst other things.
The 2021 Mazda CX-9 range is set to receive new styling options and improved tech in the United States – but whether the changes will make it to Australian models is yet to be confirmed.
The North American arm of Mazda announced its three-row SUV range will gain a new 10.25-inch central touchscreen plus the latest version of Mazda's infotainment system, Mazda Connect, and the option of a wireless phone charger.
Currently the CX-9 range in Australia features either a 7.0-inch screen on the entry level Sport or a 9.0-inch screen on the higher-spec Touring, GT, and Azami grades. Older MZD Connect software, that traces its roots back to the CX-9's 2016 introduction (and earlier on other Mazda models), still powers the system locally.
In America the new infotainment system also offers support for Mazda Connected Services including remote lock and unlock, remote start, and vehicle status checks via a MyMazda smartphone app. There's no official word on the new screen's interface, but like the Mazda Connect-equipped Mazda 3 and CX-30 the CX-9 is expected to lose its touchscreen functionality.
Additionally, the US lineup will gain a new 'Carbon Edition' specification grade, as well as some interior styling improvements on certain variants and a fresh grille and wheel design on the top-spec variant.
Following in the footsteps of blacked-out styling updates from other brands, the Carbon Edition boasts 'Polymetal Grey' exterior paint, black gloss side mirrors and grille, black 20-inch alloy wheels, black interior trim and red leather seats.
Styling and tech updates have also been added to the mid-spec and flagship offerings in the US, with the third most expensive Grand Touring variant receiving a surround-view monitor and head-up display, while the top-spec Signature adds quilted Nappa leather seats and Santos Rosewood interior trim.
The Signature spec also gains a titanium grey front grille with LED accent lighting, 20-inch silver-finish alloy wheels and large dual tailpipes.
The tweaks have also meant the US CX-9 range has increased in price by as much as US$390 per variant. The US lineup now kicks off from US$33,960 (AUD$46,908) for the front-wheel-drive Sport grade and tops out at US$46,605 (AUD$64,374) for the flagship Signature.
Mechanically the CX-9 remains unchanged for the 2021 model year.

When CarAdvice reached out to Mazda Australia as to whether the 2021 model-year upgrades would make their way to Australian offerings, we received the following response from a local spokesperson:
"Mazda Australia is currently working through the announced CX-9 updates and will advise when there is news to share for the Australian market."
Currently, the Australian CX-9 range is priced from $45,920 plus on-road costs.
The updated CX-9 is due in US showrooms in August 2020. Stay tuned for local updates.
