Video: Ferrari’s new hybrid V6 supercar caught testing in disguise

The upcoming hybrid model from Ferrari has been spied on video doing laps at the company's test track.

The hybrid V6 powertrain earmarked for Ferrari's new baby supercar has been spied testing on-track.

A test mule based on the Ferrari 488 – but fitted with what is believed to be a hybrid V6 engine – was doing laps of Ferrari's test track at Fiorano as it was secretly filmed by the YouTube channel Varryx.

The muted tones from the exhaust, not entirely dissimilar to a Nissan R35 GT-R or Ford GT, suggest the new engine will likely be turbocharged.

Ferrari is one of four engine suppliers in Formula One, which currently mandates the use of turbocharged hybrid V6 powertrains.

Reports of the development of a 'junior Ferrari' model, perhaps even called the Dino, have been circling since 2015.

There's a chance the new coupe may even spawn a Dino sub-brand, ensuring the Ferrari badge isn't cheapened. The supercar company does not have a history of re-using names, opting instead to give each new model a unique identity.

While the Dino is remembered by most nowadays as a classic Ferrari model, the nameplate originally came into existence as its own sub-brand – with the first models offered with V6 engines.

It's expected the new, more affordable hybrid V6 model will introduce a younger market to the Italian supercar maker.
