Rare classic Ferrari breaks record for online auction hammer price

A very rare Ferrari 275 GTB in the US has fetched the highest price ever paid in an online auction.

The record for the highest amount paid for a vehicle in an online auction has been broken, with this 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Long Nose selling for US$3.08 million (AU$4.3M).

The classic Ferrari is reportedly one-of-40 painted in 'white sand beach', according to auction house Gooding & Co, with only 206 of the Long Nose versions of the Ferrari 275 coupes ever being built.

The previous record set for an online vehicle auction was also held by a Prancing Horse – a 2003 Ferrari Enzo hypercar, which sold for US$2.6M (AU$3.64M) only two months ago.

Many vehicle auctions have moved to an online-only format, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The highest price paid for any car at auction was a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, selling for US$48.4M (AU$67.8M) in 2018.

Rumours of another Ferrari 250 GTO trading hands privately for US$70M (AU$98M) have persisted since 2018, but remain unauthenticated.

Market indicators show only a minor pullback of hammer prices for classic cars sold at auction year-on-year, highlighting the resilience of highly sought-after models.
