2021 Volkswagen Golf R snapped without disguise, more power coming

The 2021 Volkswagen Golf R has been secretly snapped on the production line, as new details emerge about the model's drivetrain.

The pictures – originally posted to internet forum Cochespias – reveal a new 'R' badge for the flagship Golf hot hatch, fitted directly below the recently-updated VW emblem.

Signature quad exhaust tips appear to be different from earlier spy pics of the Golf R, perhaps indicating an optional exhaust system.

Blue highlights on the brakes and steering wheel distinguish the Golf R from other models, and the interior benefits from a digital instrument cluster – as previously seen on the Golf GTI.

Drive can confirm the new Golf R will be offered in Australia with more power.

It's understood the engine won't be carried over from the current Golf R, with the new model expected to benefit from a new powertrain with extra performance.

While no details have been confirmed, rumours have suggested the new Golf R could see as much as 250kW – an increase of 37kW over the current powertrain.
