2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Recon coming to Australia in two- and four-door forms

Jeep’s rock-hopping Wrangler Rubicon ‘shorty’ returns to Australia in limited edition form

Jeep Australia has announced its first limited-edition version of the JL Wrangler, confirming the Wrangler Rubicon Recon for a run of 100 vehicles.

While the lower-grade Sport and Overland versions of the new Wrangler have been available with a choice of short-wheelbase two-door, or long wheelbase four-door ‘Unlimited’ bodies, the Rubicon range-topper has so far been available in four-door form only.

Of the 100 Recons available in Australia, 60 will stick with the familiar four-door format, while just 40 will be offered in the more 'shorty' two-door body.

Unlike the regular Rubicon, which comes with a choice of petrol V6 or four-cylinder turbo diesel engines, the Recon pack will be paired with Jeep’s 209kW/347Nm 3.6-litre V6 paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Rubicon Recon’s extras focus on appearance more so than ability, with a range of aesthetic tweaks including matte black bonnet and front guard decals, a gloss black grille, 17-inch wheels with a two-tone finish in black with machined details, and Recon badging on the guards.

Inside, the Recon picks up heated seats and a heated steering wheel, seats trimmed in black leather, torch red seat belts, and a premium wrapped instrument mid-panel with red stitching. The Rubicon Recon four-door also adds Jeep’s trail-rail load management system.

Amongst the more practical additions, the Recon also adds a Rubicon steel front bumper, Jeep Performance tailgate reinforcement system, and Jeep Performance front bumper hoop.

"A two-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon continues to be a much-desired proposition amongst the Australian off-roading community, and we’re so excited to make this dream a reality with the Recon special edition," Guillaume Drelon, Jeep Australia's director of brand and product strategy said, in a prepared statement "It offers the everyday practicality many seek, whilst remaining adventure ready."

"The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Recon is rugged, off-road ready and the most capable 4x4 straight off the showroom floor. It is truly up to any challenge passionate 4x4 enthusiasts throw at it."

Pricing for the Recon two-door starts from $66,950 plus on-road costs, while the four-door kicks off from $71,450, or a $6000 step up over the regular Rubicon V6. Premium paint adds $745 while a Premium Package consisting of body-coloured wheel arch flares and hard top adds $3000.

Standard colour options include Black and Bright white, while premium choices extend to Firecracker Red, Ocean Blue, Granite Crystal, Sting Gray, Sarge Green, and Hella Yella.

The Wrangler Rubicon’s usual list of off-road hardware remains with Rock-Trac 4x4 including Tru-Lok front and rear locking differentials with a 4.1:1 ratio and 4:1 transfer case ratio for an effective 77:1 low range crawl ratio.

The Recon also keeps the Rubicon’s disconnecting front sway bar, heavy-duty rock sliders, Dana heavy-duty live axles front and rear, and 32-inch BF Goodrich off-road tyres (US-spec cars here are shown with larger 33-inch rubber).

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Recon is available to order now, with Australian deliveries expected to commence early in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Note: Jeep has provided images of overseas-spec vehicles which depict specifications different to those available in Australia.
