Something ‘grand’ is coming soon for Jeep

Is it the long-overdue next-generation Grand Cherokee, or the long-anticipated new Grand Wagoneer?

Jeep has teased an incoming new model on Instagram, telling its followers that something ‘grand’ is coming soon to the brand.

The backdrop of the image is the Grand Canyon, but the exact model being referenced is so far shrouded in mystery. The post also includes the definition of grand: ‘magnificent and striking in appearance, size or style’.

The image could refer to the incoming new Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is due for replacement in 2021 or 2020. The current model has been on sale for nearly a decade, and COVID-related delays have pushed back the arrival of the all-new model.

However, it could also signal the return of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, which will be positioned above the Grand Cherokee in price and size. The Grand Wagoneer will likely use an adapted version of Alfa Romeo’s Giorgio platform, along with the incoming new Grand Cherokee.

The Grand Wagoneer can fill an important gap in Jeep's lineup, which currently lacks a three-row, seven seater model like the Nissan Patrol or Toyota LandCruiser. Sharing bones with large Mercedes-Benz SUVs, the current Grand Cherokee lacks the seats and size to fit more than five aboard.

The Grand Wagoneer could also be high-end luxury offering, according to what the late Sergio Marchionne told Bloomberg back in 2015:

“When I see a Range Rover on the street my blood boils because we should be able to do a thing like that – and we will," Marchionne said.

This also lines up with what Jeep Australia boss Kevin Flynn recently told CarAdvice in an interview. Without naming particular models, Flynn said their lineup is set to expand in the future.

"We have got a number of segments that we'll go into that we're not in today, and we'll be able to broaden the brand."

Prototypes of SUVs that appear to be both Grand Wagoneer and Grand Cherokee have been spied testing in recent months, so, at this point, it is truly anybody's guess as to what Jeep is preparing to reveal.

Interestingly, Jeep has already had a three-row model available for some time... in China. The Grand Commander launched in the world's biggest car market back in 2018, but it was quickly ruled out for a global launch.
