Second generation Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ prototype spy photos – UPDATE

A prototype of the second generation of the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ coupe has been spied in heavy camouflage.

UPDATE – 28 August 2020: Another Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ mule has been caught driving on Japan's roads, with photos emerging on Twitter.

While the pictures don't reveal any new details, the sudden appearance of so many prototypes suggest the sports coupe is progressing in its development.

The next generation of the popular Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ sports coupe twins has been spied for the first time.

Instagram user @kystify spotted the heavily camouflaged prototype near Toyota's research and development centre in Michigan, with the full video posted on the Instagram account @sa.speed.

Interestingly, the prototype looks to be very similar to a render from Japanese motoring publication Best Car Web in June 2020.

From what we can gather from these images, the styling appears to be an evolution of the current model rather than a revolution. The glasshouse looks the same or very similar; it could be new sheetmetal rather than a ground-up re-design. Or perhaps even an elaborate prank if someone has stickered-up an existing car.

Rumours are the new coupe could be renamed the Toyota GR 86, bringing the model in-line with other enthusiast models such as the Toyota GR Supra and Toyota GR Yaris.

Based on leaked internal Subaru documents seen by CarAdvice, the all-new Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ is set to enter production in the second quarter of 2021, with the model likely to hit showrooms by the third quarter.

It's understood production of the current-shape 86 coupe and BRZ coupe finished at the end of last month.

As reported in July 2020, the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ could be fitted with a low-power version of a brand-new 2.4-litre turbocharged engine.

With a tuned version of the 2.4-litre expected for the Subaru WRX STI, we may see this high-power engine make its way into a Toyota 86 GRMN and Subaru BRZ STI.
