2021 Maserati Ghibli Trofeo, Quattroporte Trofeo revealed

Maserati has unveiled high-performance Trofeo versions of its Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans.


Under the bonnet of the duo is a Ferrari-derived, 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine shared with the Levante Trofeo SUV, sending 433kW of power (580 horsepower) and 730Nm of torque (from 2250-5250rpm) to the rear wheels through an eight-speed ZF torque-converter automatic transmission and a self-locking rear differential.

Zero-to-100km/h times are pegged at 4.3 seconds and 4.5 seconds for the Ghibli and Quattroporte respectively, with a top speed of 326km/h claimed for both models.

For comparison, the hot sedans’ higher-riding Levante sibling squeezes an additional 7kW more from its V8 engine (only in non-European markets), drives all four wheels and sprints to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds, but tops out at ‘just’ 304km/h.

Under the skin, the Ghibli and Quattroporte Trofeo ride on double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, mated to multi-mode Skyhook adaptive dampers.

Four drive modes are on offer: Normal, ICE, Sport and Corsa (‘race’ in Italian), the lattermost placing the suspension, exhaust, stability control and gearbox response in their sportiest modes and unlocking launch control.

Differentiating the four-door Trofeo twins from their standard counterparts are tweaked lower front fascias, black front grilles, more aggressive rear diffusers, Trofeo badging, and unique, red-accented front wheel arch vents.

A carbon-fibre finish adorns the lower front splitter and front air intakes, while new 'boomerang' rear tail-lights – the design of which will be shared across all MY21 Maserati models, including the Levante – also feature.

The standard-fit sports side skirts are finished in black on the Quattroporte Trofeo and body-coloured on the Ghibli Trofeo, with the latter car gaining a restyled bonnet with dual vents.

Filling the arches are 21-inch ‘Orione’ alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero or Continental SportContact tyres, which hide performance brakes with red, blue, black or silver contrasting calipers capable of bringing the four-door Trofeo duo to a halt from 100km/h in just 34.0 metres – half a metre less than their heavier high-riding sibling.

Drag coefficients for MY21 Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante are identical to standard models within their respective ranges, at 0.29, 0.28 and 0.33 respectively.

Inside, the Ghibli and Quattroporte Trofeo score black, red or tan quilted-leather-trimmed sports seats with red contrast stitching and Trofeo embroidery.

Interior technology upgrades centre around a larger 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen running Maserati’s all-new, Android Automotive-based ‘Maserati Intelligent Assistant’ operating system, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring and Amazon Alexa voice assistant functionality.

All MY21 Maserati models support the Maserati Connect smartphone app, enabling owners to monitor key vehicle systems and keep track of when the next service is due.

Standard equipment on the Trofeo sedans includes adaptive LED headlights, keyless entry, push-button start, wireless phone charging, and power-closing doors and bootlids. A choice of 10-speaker Harman Kardon or 15-speaker Bowers and Wilkins premium sound systems are available.

A suite of Level 2 semi-autonomous driver assistance systems are on offer, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision alert, traffic sign recognition and a 360-degree camera.

The 2021 Maserati Ghibli Trofeo and Quattroporte Trofeo are expected to launch in Australia early next year.
