Around the tracks: Joe Biden’s Corvette Stingray and Audi’s awkward ad

Plus, Aston Martin whiskey, a Nissan GT-R with L-plates and Jason Momoa restoring his wife's Mustang.

When we’re not creating it ourselves, the CarAdvice team spends a lot of time finding and consuming motoring content from all over the world.

Here’s a handful of the photos, articles, videos or social media posts that most caught our eye last week. Some of them are brand new, others have been online for a while.

Enjoy them – just not too much, okay?

1. Joe Biden's tribute to his Corvette Stingray

The United States is home to Hollywood, so it's perhaps unsurprising that their political campaign ads tend to go the extra mile.

Take Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden's latest push for election, for example – a tribute to his 1967 Chevrolet C2 Corvette Stingray that somehow links back to his support for local manufacturing.

To be honest, we reckon it's more just a humble-brag about his driving skills and cool car collection than a legitimate political statement, but as car lovers we appreciate it nonetheless.

Biden uses his classic Corvette, which was a wedding gift from his father, to point to what he believes is the future of American manufacturing – electric cars.

“I believe we can own the 21st-century market again by moving to electric vehicles,” he says in the clip.

"They tell me, and I’m looking forward if it’s true to driving one, they’re making an electric corvette that can go 200mph.”

Watch it below.

2. This Nissan GT-R R36 with L-plates

Most of us learned to drive in an old Mitsubishi Magna or Toyota Corolla, but kids these days apparently have some more exciting options (although, don't knock the Magna).

This week in Parramatta, a $200,000-plus Nissan GT-R R35 50th anniversary edition was spotted wearing L-plates, suggesting one lucky learner driver was cutting their teeth in a car that can hit 0-100km/h in 2.7 seconds.

That's one way to learn how to parallel park, we guess?

3. Jason Momoa lovingly restoring wife's first car

If you watched Game of Thrones, you'll remember Jason Momoa as the imposing Dothraki chief Khal Drogo.

In real life, though, he spends less time riding horses and slaughtering civilians and more time making meaningful gestures for his partner of 15 years, actress Lisa Bonet.

One such gesture was Momoa's recent decision to restore Bonet's first car, a 1965 Ford Mustang.

Turns out the car is one of three of its kind ever made, featuring lots of custom parts which made it especially tricky to restore.

Still, the Las Vegas-based Divine One Customs was able to bring the car back to its former glory in spectacular fashion.

The transformation video below makes for satisfying, soothing and surprisingly moving viewing.

4. Audi apologising for this controversial 'little girl with a banana' ad

When they posted it, the marketing team at Audi probably didn't quite expect that their latest social media ad – a seemingly innocent photo featuring a young girl eating a banana while leaning against the grille of an RS4 Avant – would incite so much controversy.

The ad in question, which was shared to Twitter with the tagline "Lets your heart beat faster – in every aspect", received backlash on multiple levels.

For starters, some people argued it sexualised children, while others argued it promoted unsafe behaviour by having the little girl in front of the car.

The reception was so negative, Audi was forced to issue an apology, admitting its efforts to highlight the car's safety technology had backfired.

"We hear you and let’s get this straight: We care for children. The Audi RS 4 is a family car with more than thirty driver assistance systems including an emergency break [sic] system. That’s why we showcased it with various family members for the campaign," Audi said in a Twitter statement.

"We hoped we could convey these messages, showing that even for the weakest traffic participants it is possible to relaxingly lean on the RS technology. That was a mistake! Audi never intended to hurt anyone’s feelings.

"We sincerely apologize for this insensitive image and ensure that it will not be used in future. We will also immediately examine internally, how this campaign has been created and if control mechanisms failed in this case."

5. Aston Martin releasing a DB5 whiskey

Ladies and gentlemen, it's time to level up your cocktail hour. In case you were looking for somewhere to plant a spare $91,000, Aston Martin has the answer.

The iconic British manufacturer has partnered with whiskey brand Bowmore to produce the Black Bowmore DB5 1964, a limited-edition bottle of single malt Scotch whiskey featuring a genuine Aston Martin DB5 piston.

There are only 25 bottles being made and they'll be available from the third quarter of 2020 with a recommended retail price of GBP£50,000.

A great gift idea for your discerning millionaire mate, perhaps?
